April Judicial Council Meeting

The Judicial Council met at the Atlanta Sheraton Hotel on April 23, 2015.  Chief Justice Hugh P. Thompson welcomed those in attendance and the Council got to the business at hand.
 
Two special reports were delivered to the Judicial Council to start off the meeting.  Ms. Patricia S. King, Georgia Department of Human Services, reported on Emerging Trends in Elder Abuse in Georgia and Ms. Jennifer Thomas, Interim Director, Georgia Commission on Family Violence, reviewed the recently published 2014 Georgia Fatality Review Report.
 
Committee Reports
Several Judicial Council Committees delivered reports. Presiding Justice P. Harris Hines reviewed the fate of legislation reviewed and supported by the Judicial Council in the Policy and Legislative Committee report. Presiding Judge Sara Doyle gave a brief report on the Strategic Plan Implementation Committee.  Judge David Emerson discussed the work of the Judicial Workload Assessment Committee, and Judge Gail Tusan reviewed the work of the Access, Fairness, and Public Trust and Confidence Committee. Justice Harold Melton reported for the Budget Committee and discussed the work of the Statewide Judiciary Civil E-Filing Steering Committee.
 
Director’s Report
Ms. Marla S. Moore spoke of the many projects that the Judicial Council/Administrative Office of the Courts currently is involved with including the Tax Refund Intercept Program (TRIP); Access, Fairness, about Public Trust and Confidence Committee; the Registrar project; and others.  The IT Division is sponsoring an eCourts Summit for current customers who use JC/AOC IT programs.
 
Ms. Moore acknowledged the various staff members in attendance at the Judicial Council meeting prior to announcing her retirement.
 
New Business
Chief Justice Thompson thanked Ms. Moore for her years of service as Director of the Judicial Council/Administrative Office of the Courts.  He nominated Ms. Cynthia H. Clanton, General Counsel, as Interim Director. The Council voted unanimously to accept Ms. Clanton’s nomination.  A search committee has been formed to fill the position of Director.
 
Upcoming Meetings
The next meeting of the Judicial Council is scheduled for June 17, 2015 in the Empire Room of the Sloppy Floyd Building.
 
The schedule of remaining meetings is:
August 6, 2015 at the Loudermilk Center in Atlanta;
September 30, 2015 at the Macon Marriott Center in Macon, GA;
December 9, 2015 at the Carter Center in Atlanta.
