Appointments - August 2018

Court of Appeals

On May 16, Gov. Nathan Deal administered the oath of office to Judge E. Trent Brown. Judge Brown was appointed to fill the vacancy created by the appointment of Judge Tripp Self to the US District Court – Middle District of Georgia.

Judge Elizabeth D. Gobeil was sworn in on June 5 by Gov. Nathan Deal. Judge Gobeil was appointed to fill the vacancy created by the appointment of Judge Elizabeth Branch to the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

On August 1, Judge Stephen S. Goss was sworn in by Gov. Nathan Deal. Judge Goss fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Gary Andrews.

Superior Courts

• Governor Nathan Deal announced the following superior court appointments:

Judge Shukura Ingram Millender, Atlanta Judicial Circuit
Judge Shukura MillenderMillender has served as judge of the Magistrate Court of Fulton County since May 2015. She previously served as an assistant solicitor in the Atlanta Municipal Court and as an assistant district attorney in the Atlanta Judicial Circuit. Millender also spent time in private practice. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Clark Atlanta University and a law degree from the Georgia State University College of Law. Millender and her husband, Marlon, have two children and reside in Atlanta. Judge Millender fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Alford J. Demsey. Judge Millender was sworn in on August 1, 2018.

Judge Victoria S. Darrisaw, Dougherty Judicial Circuit
Darrisaw was the Chief Judge of the Dougherty County State Court. She previously served as Magistrate Judge of Dougherty County and as assistant district attorney of the Dougherty Judicial Circuit. Darrisaw earned a bachelor’s degree from Spelman College and a law degree from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University. She and her husband, George, have two children and reside in Albany. Judge Darrisaw fills the vacancy created by the elevation of Judge Stephen Goss to the Court of Appeals. Judge Darrisaw was sworn in on August 8, 2018.

Judge Joy R. Parks, Enotah Judicial Circuit
Parks served as the Chief Magistrate Judge of the White County Magistrate Court and owned her own law firm. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia and a law degree from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University. Parks and her husband, Robert, have one child and reside in Cleveland. Judge Parks fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Murphy MIller. Judge Parks was sworn in on August 14, 2018.

Judge Lauren A. Watson, Northern Judicial Circuit
Watson currently served as staff attorney to the Honorable Lawton E. Stephens of the Superior Court of the Western Judicial Circuit. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia and a law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law. Watson and her husband, Ken, have one child and reside in Athens. Judge Watson fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Thomas Hodges. Judge Watson was sworn in on August 14, 2018.

Judge Terry N. Massey, Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit
Massey was the owner of Massey Law Firm LLC and also served as municipal court judge for the City of Conyers. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia and a law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law. Massey and his wife, Shelly, have three children and reside in Greensboro. Judge Massey fills the vacancy created by the elevation of Judge Trent Brown to the Court of Appeals. Judge Massey was sworn in on August 8, 2018.

Judge Lovett Bennett, Jr., Ogeechee Judicial Circuit
Bennett is the sole practitioner of Lovett Bennett, Jr., Attorney at Law, P.C. and also serves as municipal court judge for the cities of Brooklet and Register. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern University, a master’s degree in Business Administration from Georgia State University and a law degree from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University. Bennett and his wife, Missy, have two children and reside in Statesboro. Judge Bennett fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge William Woodrum.
Judge Bennett will be sworn in on August 27, 2018.

Federal Courts

Justice Britt Grant was confirmed by the US Senate to a post of the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals on July 31, 2018.  Justice Grant was appointed to the Supreme Court of Georgia in 2017.

 Municipal Courts

 Judge Etham PhamJudge Ethan P. Pham has been appointed to the Municipal Court of Morrow. Judge Pham becomes the third judge of Vietnamese descent to serve on a Georgia Court.
