Judge Louisa Abbot• Judge Louisa Abbot (at right), Superior Court, Eastern Judicial Circuit, was named the recipient of the 2016 Savannah Bar Association’s Frank Cheatham Professionalism Award in June 2016.  The award is presented annually to those attorneys or judges whose efforts place them at the head of the class among their peers.

On June 18, Judge Chris Phelps, Superior Courts, Northern Judicial Circuit, was awarded the State Bar of Georgia’s 2016 Distinguished Service Award. Phelps was honored for his extensive service to the legal profession, the justice system and the public during his four-decade career as an attorney and judge.


• Justice Robert Benham, (below) Supreme Court of Georgia, was honored with the 2016 Chief Justice Thomas O. Marshall Professionalism Award, presented June 17 during the Annual Meeting of the State Bar of Georgia.

Justice Robert BenhamJustice Benham's professional and judicial leadership service includes being a former vice president of the Georgia Conference of Black Lawyers; a former board member of the Federal Lawyers Association and of the Georgia Association of Trial Lawyers; former chairman of the Governor's Commission on Drug Awareness and Prevention; a member of the State Bar Task Force on the Involvement of Women and Minorities in the Profession; the Georgia Commission on Children and Youth; the National Association of Court Management; and a member of the National Conference of Chief Justices; a member of the Federal-State Jurisdiction Committee; president of the Society for Alternative Dispute Resolution; chairman of the Judicial Council; chairman of the Chief Justice's Commission on Professionalism; and a member of the Governors' Southern Business Institute.

The 14th annual Chief Justice Thomas O. Marshall Professionalism Award, presented by the Bench and Bar Committee of the State Bar of Georgia, honors one lawyer and one judge who have continued to demonstrate the highest professional conduct and paramount reputation for professionalism. Justice Benham was honored along with attorney Hugh B. McNatt of Vidalia.
