Death of Senior Judge William L. McMurray

Judge William McMurrayJudge William LeRoy McMurray, Jr. was born on April 11, 1925, to William LeRoy McMurray, Sr. and Ethel M. McMurray in Rock Hill, South Carolina. He moved to Georgia at an early age and was reared on a farm in Randolph County.

Upon graduation from Cuthbert High School, Judge McMurray served overseas in the U.S. Army in Italy in World War II. After being honorably discharged, he attended and graduated from Georgia Southwestern College. He then attended and graduated from Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University after having served as president of the student body his senior year.

Judge McMurray again answered his Country's call and served overseas in the U.S. Army in Korea in the Korean Conflict. After once more being honorably discharged, he served for six years as a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

He returned to Georgia and practiced law in Cordele where he served as City Attorney prior to being elected, in a race against an incumbent, to the position of Superior Court Judge of the Cordele Judicial Circuit. Judge McMurray was twice re-elected without opposition before being appointed by Governor George D. Busbee to the Court of Appeals of Georgia on May 3, 1976. During his tenure he has served as a Presiding Judge (April 1, 1979 - December 31, 1983; January 1, 1985 - to 2000) and as the Chief Judge (January 1, 1984 - December 31, 1984).

Judge McMurray retired from the Court of Appeals in 2000. Judge McMurray passed away on April 13, 2017.
