In Memoriam

Judge David L. “Trey” Aspinwall, III, of Hinesville died on July 30, 2013.  Judge Aspinwall served as Magistrate Judge for Liberty County from 2005 until his death. He is the son of Judge Nancy Aspinwall, Probate Court of Liberty County.
Senior Judge Charles Brewer of Swainsboro died on August 20, 2013. Judge Brewer served as the Chief Magistrate of Emanuel County from 1983 until his retirement in 2004.  He joined the US Navy in 1943 and served during World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam Conflict; during his 32-year naval career, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal and seven Good Conduct Awards.
Senior Judge HW Lott of Berrien died on August 26, 2013. Judge Lott was elected in 1961 as Superior Court Judge of the Alapaha Judicial Circuit. He took senior status upon his retirement in 1981.  Prior to his judicial service, Judge Lott was elected to serve in the Georgia General Assembly from 1957-1961 and served in the US Army during World War II.

Judge A. Ronald Cook of Griffin died on August 29, 2013.   Judge Cook, a John Marshall Law School graduate, was appointed as a juvenile court judge in the Griffin Judicial Circuit in 1985, a position he held until his retirement in 2005. He served as judge of the Municipal Court of Griffin from 1987 until 2012.  Judge Cook served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict as an aviation navigator.
altSenior Judge John W. Sognier of Savannah died on September 6, 2013.  Judge Sognier, a Columbus University Law School graduate, was appointed to the Court of Appeals of Georgia in 1980, serving until his retirement in 1992.  Prior to his judicial service, Judge Sognier served in World War II and the Korean Conflict as fighter pilot in the Air Force; he received several Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross.  He served in the Georgia General Assembly and, after his retirement from the Court of Appeals, he practiced tax law and acted as a mediator.
Former Judge Joseph E. Cheeley of Buford died on October 11, 2013.  Judge Cheeley served as judge of the State Court of Gwinnett County from 1958 to 1979.   He served the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Bronze Star, Korean Service medals, and the Korean Presidential Citation. 
Former Judge Charles L. Carnes of Sandy Springs died on October 15, 2013.  Judge Carnes served in the Georgia General Assembly from 1964 until his election to the State Court of Fulton County in 1980.  He served as Chief Judge until his retirement in 1998, after which he served as senior judge.  Judge Carnes served during World War II in the US Navy.
