In Memoriam

Judge David Cannon Sr. of Canton died on November 18, 2012 of lung cancer.   Judge Cannon, a Woodrow Wilson School of Law graduate, entered the practice of law in 1982 and served as the municipal court judge in Canton.  He was integral in the establishment of Cherokee County’s Office of Indigent Defense.  Judge Cannon served as judge for the Municipal Courts of Canton and Holly Springs.
altSenior Judge Jack B. Smith (left) of Decatur died on November 24, 2012 of natural causes.  Judge Smith, an Emory School of Law graduate, was appointed to the State Court of DeKalb County in 1968.  He retired in 1998 when he assumed senior status.  Judge Smith served in the US Air Force, flying 33 missions as a navigator on a B-17 during World War II.
Judge Greg Adams of Monroe died on December 26, 2012.  Judge Adams was elected to the Probate Court of Walton County in 1981, and was scheduled to retire on December 31.  He served as Chief Magistrate of Walton County from 1981 to 1992. Judge Adams was injured in an automobile accident his sophomore year in college, leaving him confined to a wheelchair; in 1979 he founded the Georgia Association of Paraplegics.

altFormer Justice Harold G. Clarke of Forsyth died on February 26, 2013.  Justice Clarke (right) was appointed by Gov. George Busbee to the Supreme Court of Georgia in 1979; prior to his appointment he served in the Georgia House of Representatives and as the President of the State Bar of Georgia.  He served as Chief Justice from 1990-1994, with a brief interlude in 1992 when he stepped aside to allow Justice Charles Weltner to serve as Chief Justice. A World War II veteran, Chief Justice Clarke earned his law degree from the University of Georgia in 1950.
